Q. What is the relationship between our hospital and MMS?
A. Your hospital and MMS will have no contractual relationship. MMS is a medical practice management company that provides operational and business services to exclusively to physicians. Our role is to assist the physicians in the start up of their new private practice and provide on-going management services to ensure their viability and provide assurances that they will be able to satisfy the hospital’s rehabilitation needs.
Q. What are the advantages to our physician under this scenario?
A. This model provides significant benefits to both the hospital and the physicians. First, the hospital is able to eliminate the physician salaries and reduce its operating costs and associated overhead. The hospital will also get the benefit of higher qualified physicians, as private practice opportunities typically attract aggressive and entrepreneurial physicians. These physicians also have the incentive to work the extra hours, offer diversified services and aggressively manage the inpatient admissions and length of stays. All have direct and indirect benefits to the hospital.
Secondly, the physicians are given more control and typically have the ability to generate greater revenue for themselves. In turn, these private practice physicians understand the value of the hospital relationship as it's largest asset and are motivated to strengthen that partnership.
Q. What type of integration time and planning is needed for MMS to begin providing services?
A. Typically, about 60-90 days is needed to ensure a smooth transition. However, when this time isn’t available, MMS can compact the transition schedule to meet the specific needs. A schedule will be provided that outlines transitional steps.
Q. What assurances are there that this new practice group won’t hold the hospital hostage?
A. The hospital/physician partnership is inherently mutually beneficial to both. Each have significant investment in this relationship and will make all necessary efforts to ensure its success. For the alternative would be just as devastating to the medical practice as to the hospital, if not more. The relationship with the hospital will probably be the single largest asset this group will have; not only from a financial perspective, but also from the ability to provide care in the community. It is in the practice’s best interest to make sure the needs and desires of the hospital are being satisfied, if not surpassed.
Q. How would you handle a situation in which we needed to start a practice from scratch?
A. Whether it’s the start up of a new rehabilitation program or otherwise, some hospitals find them selves in need of medical direction and rehabilitation services. MMS can assist these hospitals in this endeavor by creating a private practice from scratch to meet the unique needs of the given facility.
